UAW Rejects American Axle Move Bring In Assistance Of Federal Mediator - Update [AXL]

4/14/2008 12:49:05 AM Sunday, American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. (AXL) said United Auto Workers or UAW have Rejected a proposal by the company to bring in the assistance Of Federal Mediator to help in arriving at an agreement to end the nearly 7-week strike.

The Detroit, Michigan headquartered manufacturer of components for automotive industry, with the objective of reaching a compromise agreement, requested the assistance of Federal Mediator assigned by the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service.

The company said it hoped that the involvement of an impartial third party at the bargaining table could assist both sides. The UAW refused to allow the Federal Mediator to help the parties reach agreement. AAM said it was disappointed in the UAW's decision. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said "While the UAW had conversations with a representative of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, it was concluded that a mediator could add little to the process at this juncture; in fact, it would place the mediator in a no-win situation.”
