shopping report
« Nov 02, 2008    09:01:37 PM »
all the things i bought 10 for ten dollars a few weeks back, have still not come down in price. looks like i made a wise decision.

chili is still over  2 bucks a can. tuna is 50 cents more then before

and and the hash and deviled meats i got for a buck are still over 2 also.

the store was near empty. but i blame some of that on the time change and it's 27 degrees tonight .

cat food was on sale finally.

i got 32 cans. i should have got more. i just realized they are probably clearing the shelves to do the same thing they did with chili.  really sad

How much cat food do your kitties eat in a day?

I haven't been to the grocer in three weeks.  I might go this week.

Romaine lettuce hearts will last a couple of weeks in the refrig and I always have some kind of fresh sprouts.  I usually buy one half gallon of regular milk and one half gallon of the ultrapasteurized because it will keep a month.  Other than that, I've been eating off the preps.  Prep what you usually eat...and have a way to cook.

I'll add my store report after my next adventure.

I'm hoping the Satsuma oranges are in soon and that there will start to be some holiday specials.

i was thinking of getting a couple of solar deck lights but they were too expensive.

my cat is getting really bad with the food. i know it's my fault. i give in.

but every time i go to the kitchen she wants more food.

she will eat as much as i give her too. she's like a dog.

this week she has had an exceptionally big appetite.

must be the winter coming on.

she has had 3 cans so far today. the little ones " fancy feast " . she will eat five if i give them to her.

went to the grocer today.  the cheap place.

I've noticed that in order to keep prices down, they just don't carry alot of things.  For example, the only fruit in the store was bananas, apples, and some grapes.

basic veggies-- potatoes, onions, a few squash, some artichokes that didn't look too good

it's been 26 days since my last shopping.  Some stuff was the same price, some higher.  Nothing on special really, but the cheap store doesn't really have specials.

I noticed they no longer do any instore baking anymore.  Not even birthday cakes.

Alot of folks were buying turkeys already.  I didn't even look at them.

still I spent $219... a couple of years ago, I never spent more than $140, for about the same basic stuff

oh well.

how long will that 214 last you?

i find i'm spending less now at the market. I think it's cause i'm more scared. I'm still layed off 1 day a week and if the auto industry don't get going again any time soon i can see my company consolidating and start closing locations.

i've found some cheap meals that fill you up fast. Somedays i think i'm eating cheaper then the cat.

Last night for dinner. i had some of those beef noodle side dishes that i had gotten on sale and threw in a few frozen swedish meatballs. total cost probably 1.25 but it filled me up.

cat had tweo cans of food. 1.20

for lunch i had deviled ham on burger rolls.

cost 2.00

cat had  2 cans of food 1.20

I guess we know now why there were all those reports back in the 80's of the elderly eating pet food

That $219 will last me 2-3 weeks because I have a good stash in the pantry.  And because I make sprouts for fresh food.

I'm going to try to go to Costco next week, though and stock up on some more canned items.

I'd like to get some canned fruit.  I prefer fresh fruit, but it's not always available at the cheap store.  Canned fruit isn't the best, but if it isn't too tasty, I will add it to a cinnamon crumb cake and that seems to perk up the flavor.

I talked to my sissy yesterday.  She said she's starting to make alot of stuff from scratch, especially soups.  She takes the veggies that are getting alittle old, tosses them in with some chicken broth (which you can make by adding a couple boullion cubes to water) and letting it cook for a while, then tosses in some noodles and has a great soup that feeds everyone and is very satisfying.

I gave my sissy some tomatoes.  She has used up all the ones she put in the garage to ripen up...but then she has 6 people to feed.

I still have about two weeks worth of tomatoes in the garage ripening up.

I've figured out how to make a loaf of bread last longer and not go bad.  If I make it myself, I slice it up and freeze 4 or so slices in a bag and then take out the bag when I need bread.  That way if I don't get to the whole loaf within a couple of days, it doesn't go bad and I don't have any waste.   I do this is store bought bread too...and with rolls.  Rolls come in 6-8 each packages and by dividing them up and freezing packets, I don't have any waste.

I hint I discovered about doing this with bread.  Take it out of the freezer the night before you want to use it so it can defrost slowly right in the bag and that way it reabsorbs it's moisture and it doesn't taste stale or dried out.

P.S.  I do that too with the meatballs.  sometimes I'll toss in a few frozen green beans too and then I'm getting all the food groups.

We'll get through this, just keep giving each other good hints.

sometimes when i make bread. i put it in the fridge. and if it gets hard i zap it in the micro wave for a few seconds and then butter it. If you eat it right away it's nice. But if yu let it sit too long it gets hard as a rock. Then i throw it at the squirrels The cow

yeah, bread will do that.  Alittle experimenting and you can figure out how to keep bread best in your area.

I've found that bread is like candles, they burn differently in different climes.

Keeping bread fresh depends on lots of things, so if you find something that works--USE IT

have you seen that new hand sealer from ziplock?

I saw a commercial on the teebee for them.  Somewhere I read you can buy the pump for about $5, the bags are additional.

I wonder if anyone's tried it.  It's probably not the best for long long term usage, but for a single person or a household of two, they might be a good cheap way to keep stuff fresh
