"For the first time in humanity, we are seeing, or we may be seeing, pandemic influenza evolving in front of our eyes," said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.
Originating from Mexico, the swine flu virus has infected 9,830 individuals in 40 countries across the globe, causing at least 80 deaths: 72 in Mexico, six in the US, one in Canada and one in Costa Rica.
If confirmed by the CDC, the death of the 16-month-old toddler in New York, which occurred Sunday after presenting flu-like symptoms, would be the seventh swine flu death in the country.
The majority of new flu victims (545) have been identified in Mexico and the US (409), where the number of confirmed cases has reached 3,103 and 4,714 respectively.
There were also 34 new cases in Japan, increasing the total of infected cases in the country to 193. The new wave of infection has made Japan the fourth-most infected country in the world, after Mexico, the US and Canada.
Four new cases of the virus have also been confirmed in the UK, taking the British toll to 107. Panama (5), Chile (3), El Salvador (2), Peru (1), and China (1) are the other countries which confirmed new cases on Tuesday.
