The majority of the porn spam lately
« Dec 15, 2008    05:56:57 PM »
Has been coming from Comcast ip's.  I tried to find out if there customers were being compromised somehow but I can only find old articles. Maybe there is a new trojan effecting cable subscribers in general? Something doesn't feel right. The spam is very persistent. I've blocked hundreds of ip's the last couple of days and it doesn't seem to be letting up.

Quote
Yahoo hosted my website, and I used their POP3 and authenticated SMTP mail senders. But in early 2004, many of my email messages stopped arriving at their destinations, with no error messages. They just disappeared. I finally diagnosed the problem:
- Comcast has a lot of consumers with their computers connected 24/7
- Comcast does not provide a firewall to their customers, so these un-geek customers quickly get attached with trojan viruses which take over their computers.
- These trojans then begin sending SPAM from the Comcast customer's PC.
- Comcast becomes the largest source of SPAM in the USA.
- Web administrators around the world send Comcast management letters asking them to reign-in the amount of SPAM coming from their network
- Comcast IGNORES the other web administrators.
- The other web administrators begin to block mail from ANY Comcast IP address.
- ALL Comcast dynamic IP addresses are added to SPAM blacklists, like www.spamhaus.com
- Innocent guys like me can't send mail reliably, and don't know when a message got through, or not.
- Even when I use my Yahoo Small Business SMTP mail sender servers, my Internet connection tags the message as originating from a Comcast IP number, thus I get blacklisted.

That problem started in Feb. 2004,and hasn't been fully addressed yet. At this page (
Source: http://openrbl.org/ip/67/169/18/172.htm ) you will see that as of May 2005, all Comcast dynamic IP addresses are included on 7 of 28 blacklists. What does Comcast say about it? Well, the report on Comcast at blacklister www.spews.com says, "No longer 'ignorant' - they know they spam, but they don't care to deal with the issue in a proper manner."

Turns out Comcast just didn't care that much. The issue, franky, was too confusing for Comcast customers to understand that it was Comcast's fault, so few people likely complained.

So, I hate Comcast for being a lousy Internet citizen, for being the source of a huge quantity of USA-generated SPAM, and for not caring when it knows that many of its customers' outbound emails are disappearing.

All I know is they have been driving me nuts the last few days...

The forum and The Drop Box both have been getting hammered.

I suppose the old Chinese and Russian IPs have been banned in enough places
they have been forced to find mew IP ranges to spoil.

I have to wonder just how many spammers there really are.

I know the "economic downturn" (Read: Depression) has put a lot people
out of work but could there be that many that are that desperate to
make money as to do their best to piss off every forum owner worldwide?
