Friends of an 11-year-old boy and his mother tried to make sense Wednesday of the news that they had been victims of a quadruple murder in Alabama.

According to police reports and the accounts of friends, Karen Beaty and her son, Bobby, were gunned down early Tuesday along with her sister-in-law, Tammy Garner, and Garner's 16-year old daughter, Chelsie.

Police suspect Beaty's brother, Kevin Garner, killed his family members in Tammy Garner's home in Green Hill, Ala., on the eve of his divorce trial. They say he turned the gun on himself a short time later near his own home in Priceville, Ala.

The number of Americans killed in mass shootings in the last month is greater than the number killed in Iraq this year. John Avlon says we can’t solve the problem if we don’t keep track of the dead.

It’s time for a reality check.

More Americans have been murdered in mass shootings over the last month than have been killed on the battlefields of Iraq or Afghanistan this year.

Here are the grisly statistics: 54 innocents dead in nine shootings over the past four weeks. In Iraq, 45 U.S. soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice in 2009. In Afghanistan, 43 soldiers have been killed since New Year’s Day.

(AP)  An accountant for a railroad operator killed his wife and their three children before fatally shooting himself in a northwest Maryland home, leaving a gruesome scene that was discovered Saturday by the youngsters' grandfather, authorities said.

Authorities didn't specify a motive but said there was evidence the man faced psychiatric and financial problems.

When investigators arrived at the two-story home, the couple's two sons, ages 5 and 4, lay dead in their beds, while the bodies of a 2-year-old daughter and the mother, Francis Billotti Wood, were in the master bedroom, Frederick County sheriff's office spokeswoman Jennifer Bailey said. On the master bedroom floor by the foot of the bed was the father, 34-year-old Christopher Alan Wood, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Bailey said.

The 33-year-old mother and three children suffered "traumatic cuts" and each also had at least one gunshot wound from a .25-caliber handgun, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said. Their precise cause of death wasn't immediately known, and Jenkins declined to say what was used to slash them.

The woman's father found them dead around 9 a.m. He had grown concerned after not hearing from them for several days, Bailey said.

Christopher Wood apologized to family members in one of five notes he wrote and left at the scene, and he indicated in a note that he had psychiatric problems, Jenkins said. The sheriff wouldn't elaborate on what else was written in the notes.

The sheriff also said there was evidence that Wood, a sales accountant at CSX Corp., faced financial problems and may have been in debt.

Mass Murder, Mass Media, and Missing Stories

Last summer, in the pages of the Nation magazine, Barbara Ehrenreich called attention to people turning to "the suicide solution" in response to the burgeoning financial crisis. Months later, major news outlets started to examine the same phenomenon. Last fall, a TomDispatch report on suicides and a range of other extreme acts - including self-inflicted injury, murder, arson, and armed self-defense - in response to foreclosures, evictions, bankruptcies, and layoffs, was followed, months later, by mainstream media attention to the notion of "econo-cide" - prompted, in large part, by a spate of familicides (murder/suicides in which both parents and their children die).

While it's impossible to know the myriad factors, including deeply personal ones, that contribute to people resorting to drastic measures, violent or otherwise, many press reports suggest that the global economic crisis has played no small part in a range of extreme acts.

An analysis by TomDispatch of national, regional, and local news reports in 2008 and early 2009 indicates that a silent, nationwide epidemic of drastic measures may be underway. News of such acts linked to economic woes - from armed robberies to pay the rent to financially-motivated suicides - has filtered out of cities and towns in no less than 30 states, many of which have seen multiple incidents. And since only a fraction of such acts ever receives media coverage, what is being reported, even if mostly in local newspapers, qualifies as startling.

For every Jiverly Wong, who garners days of cable-news coverage, there are untold despondent and desperate dairy farmers and retirees battered by the economy and at wits' end who respond by subjecting themselves, others, or property to violence and are hardly noticed. What follows is a sampling of such incidents, most reported locally, and organized by month - no month lacked such reports - since the beginning of this year.

HOUSTON -- A father was suspected of shooting and killing his two children on Tuesday and then turning the gun on himself in an apparent attempted suicide, police said.

Police had been looking for the 8-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother after their mother reported to authorities that "her estranged husband had called saying he had picked the kids up from the school and planned to drive them to an unknown location and kill them," spokesman John Cannon said.

A short time later, officers were called to an apartment complex in southwest Houston after a resident and a maintenance worker became concerned when they saw two children and a man in a car with its engine on.

The children were found shot and pronounced dead on the scene. A .380-caliber pistol was found in the car.

"All evidence indicates the suspect shot the kids while inside the car at the apartment complex parking lot and turned the gun on himself," Cannon said.

The 33-year-old man was transported in critical condition to Ben Taub General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

Cannon said the names of the children would be released by the Harris County medical examiner's office. He did not release the father's identity.

Hong Kong - A man poured paint thinner over himself and burned himself to death in front of his wife and diners at a Hong Kong seafood restaurant, police said Monday. The 54-year-old man, named by local media as Ng Wai-chung, went to the restaurant Sunday evening apparently to confront his wife who works at the eatery over a domestic issue.

He pulled out a bottle of paint thinner from a backpack, doused himself with it and then pulled out a lighter and set fire to himself in the city's Chai Wan district.

Ng was declared dead at the scene while his 48-year-old wife and another female restaurant employee were badly injured in the blaze and taken to hospital, a police spokesman said.

Cases of domestic violence and abuse have risen sharply over the past two years in the city of 7 million badly hit by the global economic crisis.
