Alarming news as flu season ramps up
« Oct 17, 2009    09:39:15 PM »
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Some alarming news as flu season ramps up.

The Centers for Disease Control says 11 more children have died from swine flu this week.

In all, 86 children have died from the virus this year.

That's compared to the average of 40 to 50 children who die in an entire flu season each year.

Dr. Anne Schuchat from the CDC said, "About half of the deaths that we've seen in children since September 1st have been occurring in teens between 12-17."

To make matters worse, doctors and pharmacies are dealing with a shortage of the H1N1 vaccine.

Because the virus is slow growing, companies haven't been able to make as much as they had hoped.
