H1N1 D225G in RussiaRaises Pandemic Concerns
RecombinomicsCommentary 17:05
November 20, 2009

A new sequence from Russia, A/Vladivostok/1/2009,was just placed on deposit at Genbank.  The HA sequence has D225Gwhich has come into focus because it was in all four fatalcases from Ukraine. This polymorphism has also been in recentlyreleased sequences from Australia and China.  Although thedate of collection for the Russian sequence was not included its recentappearance adds to concern that D225G is becoming more common, as deathrates throughout the northern hemisphere increase.

Moreover, today Norwayis holding a news conference on a "mutation" found in dead or dyingpatients, which may also be D225G.

The detection of this change may be more frequent in necropsy lungtissues.

Release of sequences from such samples would be useful.  The D225Ghas been found on multiple genetic backgrounds, indicating it isspreading via recombination.
