Australian Swine Flu Cases Reach 634; Schools Closed (Correct)

By Gemma Daley

(Corrects to say in second paragraph that schools will reopen June 9.)

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Australian swine flu cases reached 634, the highest number outside northern America. Two schools were closed in the state of Queensland following the spread of the infection.

Some 16 schools have been closed across Australia as authorities try to contain a spread of the flu -- officially known as H1N1. The latest, Warwick and Cairns high schools in northern Queensland, will reopen June 9 if no more than the current one case of flu at each is reported.

The southeastern state of Victoria, the nation’s second- most populous, with more than 82 percent of national cases, yesterday raised its alert level to the modified-sustained level. The federal government on May 22 updated its pandemic alert for the nation to “contain,” the third-highest level. The next level, “sustain,” means the virus is established and spreading.

Besides Victoria’s 521 cases and New South Wales’ 70, all other Australian states have at least one confirmed case of swine flu. Queensland has the third-highest level of infection at 26 following by South Australia with 7, the Australian Capital Territory at 4 and Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory at 2, the Department of Health and Ageing said today on its Web site.
