JAKARTA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A teenage girl suspected of suffering from bird flu in Central Java of Indonesia died on Friday after being hospitalized for four days, The Jakarta Post reported.

Agus Suryanto, a physician from the Kariadi public hospital, said that the 15-year old girl died from respiratory failure after suffering from fever exceeding 39 Celsius degree.

"There was a chance that she got infected by bird flu as she had been living nearby a chicken abattoir," said the physician.

He said that the hospital had taken and diagnosed a blood sample from the deceased but had yet to know the result of the test.

Indonesia records 113th bird flu death

2008-11-12 12:00:09 -

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesian health officials say a 15-year-old girl died of bird flu, raising the death toll in the country hardest hit by the virus to 113 since it re-emerged in Asia in 2003.
Agus Suryanto, who headed the team of doctors treating the patient, said the girl was from the eastern city of Semarang and died late last week after 10 days in hospital.
Local health chief Tatik Suryanti said tests for the H5N1 virus came back positive Wednesday.
Officials believe she became infected after coming into contact with sick poultry. She lived near a chicken slaughterhouse.
Bird flu is relatively hard for humans to catch, but scientists are watching the virus because it could mutate into a human strain that might spark a flu pandemic, potentially killing millions.
