Re: October 25th 2009

completed my appointed rounds.   The $ store and the petco were each getting at least 1-3 people in every 10 minutes for job applications. I heard one guy ask for the manager and said he had put in his application two weeks ago and was there any chance he would called for an interview...manager just shook her head "i'll call you if I need help..."  when the guy left she mumbled she gets hundreds of those a day

petco checkers says they are down to having two pwople in the store, the checker and the manager.   she said 90% of the time when the phone rings it's asking about employment

got my lotto, went to see Dad and chat

got home checked the headlines... why do we pay attention to those bots?

I'm going to do some chores, sit in a hot tub of epsom salts, make some whole wheat penne noodles and a garlicy alfredo sauce with onions and mushrooms to pour over the noodles and top off with some grated Romano cheese, a couple of slices of garlic bread and some broccoli sprouts and homegrown sliced tomatoes for a salad and some sliced bananas and sliced peaches for after dinner snack/dessrt

and the cat's being cranky and won't eat the kitty food I boutht her--friskies tuna and egg... she loves  friskies but apparently not this concotion-- she bitched me out and then ate some of the dry meow mix... she can be that way.... I looked for "Fresh killed songbird and Rodent in gravy" but no one makes that... i told her I tried, she's going to have to catch her own if that's what she wants

 Cheesy

i'm trying to do groceries only once every two weeks.

i week is off of the prep shelf , i have to get two weeks of cat food every trip though.

i have her on a diet but it's not working. she's had 3 cans today  and she won't let me sleep when she comes in later unless i feed her again  kitty

i think we listen to those bots because it would kind of be nice to have an event to blame for all this great disillusionment.

problem is it's a slow burn, things are still continuing to deteriorate but it's been going on so long we hardly notice it on a daily basis. then the media tries to spin us out of the bad times and we half way believe them. if a bot prediction came true it would bring about a real bottom real quick and at least we could wake up each morning knowing we were on a road to recovery from that point. better then riding the wagons in the same old rut leading us no where.

I'm trying to do one costco a month

I get most of the household stuff at costco,

and as far as the food items there go: it's just me and with the freezer I can get large amounts of stuff and freeze it and take out what I need or repack into smaller packs.

I try to keep a good variety of the types of food I like -- though I would like to have some more fish in the freezer.

I also do one regular grocery store a month. sometimes its about $50, sometimes it's closer to a hundred (don't ask about the costco totals  chuckle  )... It is usually one of three stores... I'm going to have to bone up in november and go to the winco... a rough store at best but there are some things I like to get there so I go about three times a year-- it's also a pack your own stuff store so it's hard to go and handle everything if you don't have a buddy.

i get my vitamins online and my candle supplies-- a couple of times  a year I'll get some clothes and some household stuff if I need them

I get the kitty food at petco and I get a couple of cases because she will eat some dry food too and I can get a case to last a month.

I could get by for three months maybe longer--

I didn't get two cords of wood though this year... but I'm hoping my 3 week supply will get me through what might come up

if the power is out for more than three weeks it would mean something seriously serious and I couldn't defend two cords of firewood by myself anyway

she eats the dry food along with the wet food. she goes from plate to plate. but, she dosn't eat the dry food until you put a can of wet food down with it. she also eats the dry food when i'm trying to sleep.

the cans are those little fancy feast cans. she will eat some of the other stuff but a lot of it makes her throw up, so i stick mostly to fancy feast. kitty

i am using a lot of the prep shelf for two reasons. one is money and the other is because some of the cans are dated 2006. it's a good experience also. I've found that i'm too stocked up on some things like soup. because i have canned soups and dried soups. but i am not well suppiled with fruit and juice. i will be out of juice by this weekend. i also have to ration candy and soda or i can't make it last two weeks.

juice is horribly expensive at the stores.   if I get any at the regular store, I only get what is on special...which is usually apple juice.  Apple juice with a big squirt of lemon juice in it makes it tastier for me.

I've started to get my juice at Costco.  They have BIG containers for about the same price as a little container at the store...also most of costco's juice doesn't have the high fructose corn syrup in it. Costco has some of their own brand of juice too like cranberry-raspberry.  the plastic bottles are large but if the lid is on tight they will lay down on a shelf.  this is the only way I can afford/justify buying healthy juice.

i'm trying an experiment with kitty.  I got a 16 ounce container of gravy mix at costco for about $4.  It would make gravy for years...anyway, I am going to heat up about 1/4 cup of water in the microwave, take it out, put in a tablespoon of the gravy mix and three or four tablespoons of meow mix and let it sit until the meow mix absorbs the liquid and then I will put it on kitty's plate and see if she likes it.  maybe she's just tired of dry food.  i'll let you know how it goes.

fancy feast is expensive and the cans are small...my kitty doesn't like  it.  she did finally eat the friskies tuna and egg after letting it sit for a couple of hours.  in fact, once she tried it, she seemed to like it

a little hairball control medicine might help with the puking.  I splurge and get her the temptations hairball control treats and she loves them. I give her 6-7 once or twice a week and it helps prevent the puking.

I have too much soup for me, too, but it is a soup emergency food-- doesn't take too much power to heat it up.

i have to limit my snacks too because store bought are so expensive.

with the holiday season coming, there will be specials on stuff that we can put away in storage.  look for specials on canned fruit.  it's not as good as fresh, but it is tasty and it's better than nothing.

if you like chocolate and the stores have chocolate chips on sale during the holidays I get a couple of bags and pull out 10-20 chips in the evening for a snack.  it's just enough to satisfy the need for a sweet snack.

it's hard being poor but we are helping each other to still try to have a fairly good life.  too often poor people go right for the premade packaged snacks and treats and spend way more than they would if they would get creative

too bad we live so far away from each other

When I was making the cinnamon raisin Krusteaz mix coffee cake for my neighbor who had cancer surgery last week,  I was searching all through the kitchen for a glass baking pan that was large enough for the recipe.  (He bought  the industrial size mix which makes a full sheet and I had to cut the mix parts in thirds and make him a 3 quart coffee cake)

I finally remembered that the glass pan I had in mind was one I used at sonny's  house… so, I used an old metal pan 13x9.

neighbor  said the bottom half of the coffee cake had a weird taste that told him the pan should no longer be used for baking

baking ware here was in need of replacement and  I had started to replace a piece or two BHBL (before hell broke loose).

Anyway, that was upsetting news – I bake good dang it! Frakking pan make my baked goods taste metallic!  Out to the trash with them. (Actually, I’m going to use them for sorting trays in the garage).

I did some research because I had heard that Pyrex had been bought by the Chinese and the glass isn’t made out of the same materials that ‘mericans used when we made Pyrex… and my research substantiated what I had heard…so I bought some Marinex on Amazon today—an early Christmas present to myself and my home.  Got free shipping and the pieces qualified for the buy three get fourth free offer.

I had just enough ripe bananas to make some banana bread this afternoon.  I used a throw away aluminum pan I had to bake it in.  It is beautiful banana bread—but it’s just for me…

I told the neighbor ‘no more baked goods’ until the new Marinex arrives.

i found some jiffy corn muffin mixes for 49 cents. each container makes about 6 decent size muffins. a little water and milk let them sit a few and bake.  Now i'm a baker  green blobber

i have a glass meatloaf and bread pan. a glass 9x13 and a glass small lasagna size pan.  i was getting a metalic tase when i cooked chicken in my old pans so i used it as a paint pan when i did the bathroom over.
glass is easier to clean too. just have to be carefull not to shock it and break it. and reduce the cooking temp a little.
