H1N1 mutations emerging around the world
« Nov 18, 2009    10:19:34 PM »
More than 50 isolated cases of H1N1 mutation that results in resistance to antiviral drugs like Tamiflu have been identified around the world since the outbreak of the Novel A H1N1 virus, also known as Swine Flu. These cases have been carefully monitored, but have not appeared to spread beyond the original host. Now, however, a cluster of patients with the H1N1 mutation have been identified in a single hospital.

Patients with H1N1 virus mutation

Four patients at Duke University Hospital were found to have been infected with the H1N1 mutation that caused a resistance to antiviral drugs during a six-week period. Five patients in Wales have also recently been found to be carrying the H1N1 virus in a Tamiflu-resistant strain. In addition, three patients in Norway were infected with a severe form of the H1N1 virus that attacks the respiratory system more severely. The Ukraine flu outbreak is also characterized by more severe symptoms, including bleeding in the lungs.
