Egypt confirms H5N1 human infection

GENEVA -- The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced four new cases of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza, according to the World Health Organization.

A 56-year-old female from Sharkia governorate. She developed symptoms on Dec. 22, hospitalized on Dec. 23, and received treatment with oseltamivir. She was discharged from the hospital on Dec. 30, 2010, in a stable condition.

No information is available regarding poultry exposure. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.

A 25-year-old female from Qena Governorate developed symptoms on Dec. 19, was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 27, and died on Dec. 29, A case investigation revealed that she had contact with poultry.

A 27-year-old male from Ismailia Governorate developed symptoms on Dec. 23, and was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 28, 2010. He was still under treatment in the hospital as of Jan. 5, 2011. No information is available regarding poultry exposure. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.

A 40-year-old male from Dakahlia Governorate developed symptoms on Dec. 25, and was admitted to hospital on Dec. 30. He died on Jan. 2, 2011. He had contact with poultry.

Laboratory tests have confirmed the H5N1 virus.

Of the 119 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 40 have been fatal.
